Massage

What to Expect

For your first massage appointment, we recommend arriving 5 minutes early to fill out any paperwork unless you completed it online prior to your appointment (via confirmation email).

We will begin by getting to know you and your chronic pain / injury, asking questions about your lifestyle, and understanding to your goal(s) for the massage session. Once you are settled on the massage table, we will analyze, work with, and release your muscle and fascial tension. We will integrate any/all of our modalities and topicals to tailor your massage for your body. Additionally, you can expect us to comment throughout the session about what we notice going on in your musculature (compensation patterns, extra tight spots, posture patterns, etc).

Our goal is to have you leave with less pain than when you came in, and progress EVERY session.

During your first appointment, you’ll notice that we actively listen, ask questions about your pain, and care about your journey.

Massage Techniques Commonly Used

01. Active Release Techniques

Active Release Techniques are used when a client activates a muscle while we apply pressure to the muscle. This is an efficient way to release a muscle, especially one that is impeding your range of motion. This is a modality rarely taught in massage schools anymore. 02. Myofascial Release

Essentially, fascia is a layer of ‘webbing’ that lines your entire body (even your face!). It is made up of connective tissue and lies under your skin, on top of your muscle. When the body needs to protect an area (emotionally or physically) it will create more fascia in a certain area. This helps prevent us from getting injured at the time, but it can also cause chronic pain overtime. Myofascial release techniques entail finding those areas of peak fascial tension and loosening them to decrease your pain levels and injury risk.

03. Deep Tissue and Trigger Point Therapy

Using deep pressure, we are able to release the deeper muscles and areas you can’t always get on your own! In addition, we use trigger point therapy to find the culprit areas of pain. This technique is very impactful for those experiencing headaches, radiating pains, chronic back pain, and more!

04. Pre- and Post-Performance Sports Massage

Are you a pro athlete in the area that needs to get ready for their next competition? Maybe you’re running your first half marathon next week and just want to feel good before and after the race. We are here for you! We offer full body pre and post performance/competition sports massage to loosen your muscles before the competition (increasing performance and decreasing injury risk) and after the competition (help get your body back to baseline by loosening the muscles and doing injury prevention work).

Whether your next performance/competition is a long walk with a friend or an ultramarathon, we are here to keep you healthy!

05. Range of Motion and Passive Release Techniques

Passive release techniques encourage specific muscles in your body to relax while we provide a light range of motion to a surrounding joint. This technique is very impactful when looking to release a muscle that is impeding a client’s range of motion.

06. Cupping

We will place plastic or glass cups on your trigger points, areas that are holding the most tension, and areas with fascial knots to encourage fascial release in the area.

A cup will use suction to hold onto your fascia really tight in one specific spot (for 1-5 minutes) and when we take off the cup, all of the fascia under the cup releases. We often use these after working on an area of the body muscularly. Cupping also helps with circulation and blood flow in your body.

Cups do leave ‘bruises’ that can last 1 day – 4 weeks depending on your body. We will put arnica on top of them at the end of your session to encourage faster healing.

07. Graston / Fascial Scraping

Using a stainless steel tool, your practitioner will be able to scrape and release the fascia under your skin. This can be immensely impactful for those that have nerve impingements, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, low range of motion, and more!

08. Nervous System Regulation

Similar to a Swedish massage, this technique uses a very light pressure and encourages deep breathing to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This can help the body be more open to releasing.
